Shirley Treichel had for many years tried many different hobbies when she discovered that she enjoyed working with chocolate. Shirley's Bakers Boutique is situated in Menlyn, Pretoria, Gauteng.
She made and sold a large variety of chocolates as a hobby, which she enjoyed very much. She attended a day of demonstrations where she saw a demo on how to make one’s own silicone moulds. She was eager to try to make her own chocolate moulds, so she bought some moulding material and made some for her personal use.
At the branch of the SACDG where she belonged, they had a competition at the end of the year where they made plaques with icing decorations on them. Being new to this craft, Shirley did not have the skills or knowledge yet to produce a work of art, so she took the easy way out and used the silicone moulds she made for herself.
Members of the branch asked where she got the silicone moulds to make the icing decorations. After two or three years of being asked the same question, where can they buy Silicone Moulds in the Pretoria area, she realised there was enough of a demand for Silicone Moulds for cake decorators.
There were some Silicone Moulds available from other manufacturers, but not a large variety and she had a totally different range of silicone moulds that she had made for her own use. Shirley realized that there was a market gap and decided that she would make them for resale.
The rest is history! Shirley’s Bakers Boutique is now one of the leading silicone mould suppliers in South Africa.
