Gillian Bonegio teaches all aspects of Spanish Dance (Flamenco, Classical and Regional) - private dance lessons and classes - from age 6 to 95. Bonegio Spanish Dance Academy is situated in Randburg and Bedfordview.
Gillian Bonegio started ballet lessons at the age of 8 with Bernice Hotz. Later she began Spanish dance lessons with Desi Cohen, and subsequently studied with Theo Dantes, Rhoda Rivkind and Hazel Acosta. She matriculated at the Johannesburg High School for Art, Ballet and Music with distinctions in Spanish and Greek dance.
She performed throughout South Africa and Greece with the Mercedes Molina Spanish Dance Company, and then went to Spain to further her studies, where she took classes with Paco Romero, Pedro Azorin, La Tati, Ciro and Martin Vargas, and danced in the company of Antonia Granados. On her return from Spain she and her husband Raul founded The Bonegio Spanish Dance Company.
She has appeared in several TV productions for Hazel Acosta (Misa Flamenca, Blood Wedding, Don Juan and Tango), and has also performed as guest artist for the Jose Montoya Spanish Theatre.
She performed with Antonio del Castillo during 1985 and 1986. She has presented her company in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and in 1994 at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre with the internationally acclaimed Jose Greco as guest artist. In 1998 and 1999, she and her company performed in the box-office hit ‘Cantina Tequila’ at the Theatre-on-the-Square in Sandton.
A year later, the company was back at the same theatre, performing ‘La Danza’ with Jose Junco as guest artist and partner for Julia, who is recognised as one of South Africa’s leading exponents of Spanish dancing. In 2013 Gillian and the Bonegio Spanish Dance Company presented the show ‘Energia’ at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square. After returning from Spain the company presented ‘Inspiracion’ in December 2013, followed by ‘Sentimientos’ in January 2015. The company continues to perform regularly at various venues and corporate functions.
Gillian has her IDB (Instructor de Baile) and PDB (Profesor de Balie) teaching qualifications of the Spanish Dance Society, and also holds her Diploma Final qualification, as well as the Primera and Segunda Diplomas de Enseñañza of Alianza Flamenca. She is also an examiner for Alianza Flamenca. Gillian is the Spanish Dance Instructor at the National School of the Arts, and has also been appointed an examiner for the Gauteng Department of Education.
